Substitute
This interactive work appropriates the recreational ‘cut out photo board’ to encourage the viewer to participate by placing their head in the void left by Christ’s. It prompts the spectator to question their relationship with the Christian symbol of the crucifixion. It also attempts to engage the audience with the current theological debate concerning substitutionary atonement in which the ‘victim’ such as a sacrificial lamb or in this case Christ, substitutes their life for the sinner’s life as an act of atonement towards God.
