Halo

Picture
2018,Last breath - study (from Caravaggio), Oil on panel, 300 x 300 mm.
This corpus of work explores the notion of the halo through the medium of paint. It suggests that its origin lies in rare natural celestial optical phenomena, which were then projected onto mortal human rulers to deify them. The halo was subsequently appropriated by religion and its symbolic presence and absence is re-examined from the perspective of contemporary culture and society. The work was commissioned for a solo exhibition at www.wellhousegallery.co.uk between 4th November & 18th December 2018.
