Annunciation
This series of works is based on photomicrographs of Leonardo’s Annunciation (1472-5). The gestures and marks of the maestro have formed the basis of a painting, graphite drawings, screen prints and a bronze sculpture.
My investigation is not as an historian in search of iconography but as a maker; looking for passages of paint, gesture of line, subtleties of surface that offer possibilities and impetus to the making process. By using this approach I try to give a modern voice to imagery created (but unseen) in the past.

The muted palette of the prints has been restricted to the use of terre verde and aquamarine blue referencing the limited palette of its ancestry: da Vinci’s Annunciation was executed with modest materials of wood, pigments and oil; the derived works use simple materials highlighting the key role of the artist is in bringing components together.
